opesus Makes Annual Holiday Donation to Himalayan Stove Project

Every year at opesus, we pass on the Christmas cheer to those in need. Instead of gifting our customers opesus-branded goodies, we donate to a charity organization in their name. For 2018, opesus donated to the Himalayan Stove Project – an organization that is transforming the lives of residents in mountainous Nepal, one clean cooking stove at a time.

Why the Himalayan Stove Project? One of our fellow opesians chose this organization because of a personal connection and the impact it has on sustainable living. We like that something as simple as a clean-burning, fuel-efficient cook stove can have a huge impact on health and environment.

Most households in the mountainous trans-Himalayan region cook over open fire pits inside their poorly-ventilated homes. This method does not only consume excessive amounts of precious fuel, but it also pollutes the indoor air to dangerously unhealthy levels.

The donated cooking stoves reduces fuel consumption by up to 75%. In addition, the ventilation out of the confined space of a typical Nepalese mountain home reduces household air pollution by 90%, thus improving the health quality of its residents.

opesus received the Technology Fast 50 Award – for the 3rd time in 3 years

opesus received the Technology Fast 50 Award, which recognizes Germany’s fastest growing technology companies, for the 3rd time in a row. The rankings are based on the percentage growth in sales over the past four fiscal years [2014-2017]. opesus’ self-developed software products, which complement and extend existing SAP sustainability solutions, contributed significantly to this growth in sales.

Alexander Wegener, CEO of opesus, views opesus’ current position positively. He explains, “Right now the topic of product notifications according to CLP Article 45 is entering a hot phase. The deadline 1.1.2020 is relevant for producers, importers, and downstream users who place mixtures for use by consumers on the market. These companies need to be ready to comply with their legal obligations. This is the reason why our team put a lot of effort into developing our opesus EPN. It enhances SAP EHS and is an efficient tool to ensure compliance easily. With the deadline approaching fast, we expect further significant growth of our client base. This base already consists of many well-known companies. Right now, all our clients combined employ over 1.2 million people. That is quite an impact for a small company and we feel honored by their trust. It is a huge driver for us and the core of our business philosophy.”

“Many fast-growing companies from Germany have a strong standing in highly innovative technology sectors. Responsible for that are courageous entrepreneurs, who are consequently pursuing their visions,” explains Dr. Andreas Gentner, Partner and Head of Technology, Media & Telecommunications EMEA at Deloitte. “We wish to reward extraordinary achievements for the technology region Germany with the Fast 50 award.”

We at opesus are very proud to win this prestigious award the third year in a row!

Implications of PCN-Format of CLP Article 45 for Product Notifications

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published the technical format for reports to poison centres (according to CLP Article 45)! The new PCN-Format is based on the internationally harmonised IUCLID format. This article explores the effects the new format will have on industry.

IUCLID format for product notifications

Contrary to the preliminary draft, the new PCN-Format is now based on the IUCLID format. The IUCLID software allows data on chemical properties to be maintained, stored and exchanged. The internationally harmonised IUCLID format is used for this purpose. This format will now also be used for notifications to poison centres in accordance with CLP Article 45.

The IUCLID format consists of a variety of templates for documents, which are structured according to the type of information it contains (e.g. GHS data).

For the PCN format, 15 existing documents are reused. In addition, two new templates are added to the IUCLID format: “Product Information” and “Dossier Header”, which provides notification type details (e.g. update). All completed documents are combined into a dossier, which associates the contained documents through administrative data. The completed dossier will subsequently be sent to the national authorities. The dossier can then be used by national poison centres for emergency calls.

Effects of the PCN-Format for the industry

At opesus, we work in close cooperation with industry, ECHA and SAP to assist companies with their CLP Article 45. We are currently developing a new version of our software opesus EHS Product Notification, which supports the new PCN-Format. Based on our experience, we see the following effects of the new format:

Increased Complexity

A dossier consists of many documents that are linked by administrative data. The new PCN-Format is therefore very complex and much more comprehensive compared to previous formats.

For example, a very simple notification (a few substances with no “special” types) generates about 1,500 lines of XML code in PCN-Format. In comparison, the notification of the same mixture in the previous German (BfR) format consists of about 150 lines of XML code.

Possible use of IUCLID software

One way to create IUCLID-compatible dossiers is to use the IUCLID software. The software is available for free. However, the data must be maintained manually via the input mask of the software. For this reason, in our opinion the use of IUCLID software is advisable only for smaller companies with very limited mixtures subject to notification.

Note: In the past, SAP EH&S had an IUCLID interface. However, the interface currently only supports the older IUCLID 5.4 version and will be discontinued in SAP S/4HANA. From our point of view therefore, the IUCLID interface in SAP EH&S is not a viable solution.

Annual IUCLID updates

The IUCLID format is subject to annual updates. These updates can be prompted by changes in legislation or to the PCN-format. Also, changes that do not originate from CLP Art. 45 need to be evaluated and may cause adaptions to PCN notifications. For all solutions that creates notifications in PCN-Format, availability of software maintenance is therefore essential to be able to react to changes in time and reliably. We recommend maintenance for all our customers for our opesus EHS Product Notification software.

New version of the free opesus UFI generator available

We have released a new version of the opesus UFI Generator for SAP EHSM customers. With the new version, Unique Form Identifiers (UFI) can be generated and stored automatically in SAP EHSM.

Unique Formula Identifier (UFI)

As part of product notifications according to CLP Article 45, the UFI will gradually become mandatory from 2020 onwards. The UFI is a unique code generated by the manufacturer or importer. The UFI must be included in the notifications to the Poisons Centres and in the safety data sheet. Additionally, it must be printed on the label.

More information about the UFI can be found on the ECHA website.

New SAP property “Poison Centers Notification (EU)”

On May 18th, SAP released the new standard property called “Poison Centers Notification (EU)”. This property can be used to store the UFI. When using the new standard property, the UFI is thus stored on specification level.

Advantages of the opesus UFI Generator

The opesus UFI Generator contains a ruleset that generates valid UFIs and writes it into the new SAP property. Therefore, the process of data maintenance of UFIs can be largely automated.

All steps are carried out directly within SAP EHSM. There are no other web services to connect.

The ruleset can be configured by various parameters. You can tailor the process for creating UFIs accordingly to customer-specific needs – e.g. by using another property for storage.

How to get the opesus UFI Generator

The opesus UFI Generator is available to all SAP EHSM customers for free under the MIT license. You can request the UFI Generator via the contact form on this page. We will then send you the documentation and the software.

EU Poison Centre Notifications: New “UFI” Required by 2020

ECHA introduced a Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) that will be required for all hazardous mixtures placed on the EU market (CLP Article 45). Any hazardous mixture intended for consumer use must adopt this format by 2020. Products for professional use have a deadline of 2021; and products for industrial use must adopt UFI by 2024.

UFI’s are a unique code that is generated by the EU manufacturer or importer, registered with the Poison Centre and must be printed on the label. The UFI allows Poison Centres to accurately, effectively, and efficiently respond to inquiries.

Visit the ECHA website for more details, including a web-based UFI generator.

UFI Generator for SAP EHSM

The opesus UFI Generator automatically creates the UFI in SAP EHSM systems. The program is designed to save time and effort by integrating UFI generation directly into the SAP system.

SAP sustainability solutions, specifically SAP EHS Management

Well, I guess that doesn’t come unexpected. Since SAP EHS Management is the foundation of our offering, we will give you news on that. We try to bring added value to you by providing our assessment in addition to the facts. Or pointing to issues that may have slipped the notice of SAP EHS users. Or just trying to explain statements from SAP that are so heavy with “SAP code” that it’s not easy to decipher the actual meaning.

Regulatory updates

We will talk about regulatory updates in the context of SAP EHS Management. We won’t just repeat news from other sites. We will write about how regulatory updates affect SAP EHS Management customers and what they can do to handle them efficiently.
