SAP® Responsible Design and Production
What is SAP® Responsible Design and Production (RDP)?
SAP Responsible Design and Production (RDP) helps businesses stay compliant with packaging regulations while advancing circularity. It combines SAP and third-party data with global regulatory intelligence to calculate Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees, plastic taxes, and reporting obligations across markets—all in one central software solution.
SAP RDP links packaging composition at all levels with real sales data to generate accurate, auditable reports—critical for EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) compliance and other EPR schemes.
The solution is cloud-deployed and integrates seamlessly with the broader SAP ecosystem, including SAP S/4HANA, SAP Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and other SAP sustainability solutions. SAP RDP delivers end-to-end traceability and real-time insights while also pulling data from suppliers and third parties for recyclability and regulatory updates.
The result: fewer compliance risks, reduced plastic taxes through accurately calculated fees, and smarter, more sustainable packaging decisions—at scale.

What are the key features of SAP® RDP?
Global regulation management
- Out-of-the-box reports to track and apply complex EPR schemes (CITEO, CONAI, Spain PPT, and others).
- Track additional regulations and fees using user-defined reports and templates, allowing users to define custom rules based on specific regulatory requirements.
- Calculate regulatory costs and optimize material choices
Data management
- Manage multi-layer packaging structures and diverse material compositions through a unified data model.
- Integrate logistics data from your SAP systems to accurately trace how much of your packaging is sold by country.
What types of regulations and standards does SAP® RDP support?
- US EPR Laws: Currently in force in California, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Washington.
- EU EPR Regulations: Hungary, UK, Denmark, and many more.
- Plastic Packaging Taxes: Spain, United Kingdom.
- EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation: Coming into force in 2025.
