On November 8 and 9, 2021, SAP held a two-day conference the SAP Environmental, Health and Safety and Product Compliance Info Days. This conference, held annually, is targeted to customers using SAP sustainability solutions. As an SAP Partner, naturally we attended the virtual webinar to get to know the latest solution updates and planned developments in the area of SAP Product Compliance.

What is the focus of SAP S/4HANA for product compliance? Why do companies need it?

With SAP S/4HANA for product compliance, companies can manage the marketability of their products in terms of ensuring their regulatory compliance. Additionally, the solution helps companies identify and document products according to dangerous goods regulations for transportation. Companies can also create safety data sheets (SDS) and labels in compliance with chemical regulations and other legal requirements.

As companies face an increasing number of regulations, SAP S/4HANA for product compliance allows companies to efficiently manage and keep an overview of the regulations that are relevant to the marketability of their products. Should an SDS be missing, or a dangerous goods assessment is incomplete, products cannot be transported or sold.

SAP S/4HANA for product compliance is the successor solution to all product-related topics in SAP Environment, Health and Safety (SAP EH&S) and SAP Environment, Health and Safety Management (SAP EHSM). At opesus, we extend SAP's offering with our EHS Product Notification solution (opesus EPN). We support SAP customers to generate and automatically submit SCIP Database notifications or Poison Centre Notification (PCN) to meet the legal obligations according to the Waste Framework Directive or CLP Article 45.

Which Editions of SAP S/4HANA for product compliance are available?

The solution is available in three different editions:

  • On-premise: SAP S/4HANA for product compliance
  • Cloud: SAP S/4HANA Cloud for product compliance, essentials edition
  • Cloud: SAP S/4HANA Cloud for product compliance, extended edition

What are the differences between the classic and new functionalities?

Most of the features of SAP Product Safety and SAP Product and REACH Compliance as well as the SAP GUI transactions, the specification database and the workbench approach are still covered in the "classic" functionalities.

A new process model, Fiori apps, new/CDS-based data models and new integrations into product master, sales, delivery, procurement, and transportation are listed as examples of new functionalities in S/4HANA.

When do I have to switch from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA?

The transition period will be aligned with the end of maintenance of SAP ECC 6.0 (which contains "SAP Product Safety" and "SAP Product and REACH Compliance"). This will be the end of 2027. Nevertheless, the classic functionalities in S/4HANA will probably be available until 2030.
