The Swiss UFI Requirement and the End of Transition Period
Starting 1st January 2026, preparations, biocides, fertilizers, and e-liquids that are classified as hazardous on the basis of their health and physical effects, placed on the Swiss market must be labelled with a unique formula identifier (UFI) and notified in the Swiss Chemicals Product Register (RPC).
The End of Transition Period
The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) introduced the UFI in 2022 for preparations, biocidal products, fertilizers, and e-liquids that are classified for health or physical hazards. Up until the end of 2025, products in scope intended for private use, and products that already have a UFI under the EU CLP Art. 45, need to be notified to the Swiss Chemicals Product Register (RPC).
From 1st January 2026, all products in scope, both for private and professional use, classified for their physical and health hazards must be labelled with a UFI and notified in the Swiss Chemicals Product Register (RPC).
EU UFI vs Swiss UFI
Similar to the EU's requirement under CLP Article 45, Switzerland mandates a unique UFI code for all hazardous products, enabling poison centers to quickly identify the exact composition of a mixture in case of emergency.
Unique formula identifiers (UFI) created for the European Economic Area (EEA) is also accepted by the Swiss authorities. Nevertheless, a separate notification to the Swiss Chemicals Product Register (RPC) is required, even if the EU Poison Center is already notified.
You can also generate a Swiss-specific UFI code from the Swiss RPC for products sold only in Switzerland.
Best Practices for Seamless UFI Compliance Integration in SAP
Even though UFIs generated for the EEA is accepted in Switzerland, companies need to submit a separate notification to the Swiss authorities.
Managing UFI code generation, maintaining high data quality, and ensuring timely submissions to multiple authorities can become overwhelming without integrated IT support. Digitalization of compliance workflows are essential for success.
If you’re using SAP Product Compliance, the opesus solution empowers companies to efficiently manage their compliance processes. Designed specifically for the SAP landscape, companies can generate UFI codes directly within SAP and submit notifications automatically to the relevant authorities.
Leverage automation, built-in validation checks, and direct system-to-system submissions from SAP. Want to know how you can manage large volumes of UFI codes and stay on top of mandatory product notifications? Contact us today!
